Guess what the people on Twitch were watching this year? No, it was not a brand new AAA-rated game or other popular games launched this year.

It was a game that came out at the beginning of the last console generation. Yes, our very own 8-Year old GTA V.

According to StreamElements’ State of the Stream 2021 year in a review report, GTA V had a watch time of whooping 2.1 billion hours in 2021! That’s about 239726 Years of watch time!

How does a game that came out 8 years ago still manage to attract so many eyeballs?

What is the Analysis About?

The most-watched Twitch game of the year which is often seen as the most entertaining game of the year. It shows how people are actively involved in the game rather than simply playing it.

According to Rainmaker.gg Twitch viewers amassed to GTA V whenever xQc, MontanaBlack88, or Summit1G were playing.

And due to a major contribution by GTA V, the overall Twitch viewership also increased in 2021 by 1.3 billion of watch time, reaching 2.1 billion hours from 764 million watched in total.

The Most-Watched Category on Twitch

This year’s Twitch viewership numbers depict that the overall most-watched category on the platform was Just Chatting. It is a section of the live streaming website where streamers usually react to clips, reply to chats, or rant their heart away.

Other than GTA V, the most-watched games of 2021 were League of Legends, Fortnite, Valorant, Minecraft, Call of Duty Warzone, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Apex Legends, and Dota 2.

How is Grand Theft Auto V Still Relevant?

In terms of pure revenue, GTA V stands tall as one of the most popular pieces of media of all time and is the most successful and profitable ever. No wonder people still watch others play it.

The game has continued to remain relevant and popular mainly because of the online updates by Rockstar Game’s support. The other main reason is its highly addictive GTA Online mode.

When GTA Online was introduced, it allowed the players a wide range of freedom and activities to new. With continuously updated newer stories, updated weapons, vehicles, and online heists, the game continued to attract the attention of players.

With the success of GTA Online, it could make some believe that it had outgrown Grand Theft Auto with its online experience.

Even if players complain about wanting to play GTA 6, Rockstar Games seem to be in no hurry to introduce a new game. Why would they be, when they are still raking in money from the success of GTA V.
